I heard on Vox that #[booktok](https://www.vox.com/culture/23644772/booktok-money-business-sponsored-videos?ref=boooook-ghost.ghost.io) is trendy. I'm slowly becoming a luddite but I do love a good old fashioned blog *without* a million pop ups or pay wall. I really don't even want your email address.

So here are my 2026 top New England summer book tips so you can become wicked smaht.

### #**1 Read Moby Dick..all summer**

She's a leviathan for sure (I still have 75 pager left) but I believe in you. Read 5-10 pages per day next summer and let the story and language transport you to the life of the sea in the mid-1800s. Once you finish (or before you finish like I did), go visit [Arrowhead](https://berkshirehistory.org/?ref=boooook-ghost.ghost.io) in Pittsfield, MA. Wonderful tour and solid gift shop with work from local artists. Best part is you get to brag all summer that you're reading Moby Dick so people think you're wicked smaht. IMPORTANT: I don't condone whaling or any retroactively problematic parts of the book.

### **#2 Think about the impact of summer tourism**

[Little Great Island](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/98c1551e-57c0-436e-97db-b28c5108fb39?ref=boooook-ghost.ghost.io) by Kate Woodworth is a novel that sucked me in and also made me think about the ethical dilemma of participating in summer tourism in beautiful New England. I love fleeing the city to New Hampshire's lake regions, Maine's coast and Cape Cod, but I see the impact of over-tourism during a condensed time period. As someone who loves to explore and would prefer not doing that at the expense of other peoples' quality of life, I hope that it is possible to find a balance between celebrating beautiful destinations and supporting locals.

### **#3 Buy books at a flea market like our grandma's did**

$5/book? In this economy? What a bahgain!

### **#4 Go get your eco-friendly freak on in Beverley**

I know what you're thinking: can our individual actions really add up to meaningfully slow climate change? Whatever the answer is, Cabot Street in Beverley is still a little mecca for someone who cares about the environment and supporting local businesses: find a book at [Copper Dog Books](https://copperdogbooks.com/?ref=boooook-ghost.ghost.io), fill up on a plant-based meal at [Organic Garden Cafe](https://www.organicgardencafe.com/?ref=boooook-ghost.ghost.io) and then grab zero-waste supplies at [Unpacked Living](https://www.unpackedliving.com/?ref=boooook-ghost.ghost.io).

### **#5 Explore LFL's near you, contribute donations... or start one!**

Whether you're looking for a new read or making room on your bookshelf to display your Moby Dick trophy book, exploring [Little Free Libraries ](https://littlefreelibrary.org/?ref=boooook-ghost.ghost.io)can be a great way to see what weird and interesting things people read and occasionally find a *stellar* book. If you're able to and have the land, consider adding one outside your house!
